Love is (2)

Love is a stranger’s random act of kindness.

During the hullabaloo of Friday night’s “snowballapalooza” at Centennial Park, I lost my cell phone. And as most of you know, that’s like losing an appendage.

Convinced that I’d never see the familiar face of my precious BlackBerry, I posted a Missed Connection on Craigslist.

After this, and going back in the snow to search for the phone several times, I decided to just give up and file the insurance claim for a lost phone.

Wednesday, I anxiously awaited the arrival of my replacement phone, just so I could once again be constantly connected to my email, Twitter and Facebook accounts. Then, I got a phone call.

“Hi, Ms. Presley, this is so-and-so from Verizon Wireless, and I’m calling to let you know someone found your phone.”

Yeah, you read that right. Someone found my phone in the park and TURNED IT IN. Verizon Wireless guy connected me with the guy who found my phone, and he offered to bring it by my office.

It’s not just a good story. It’s the story I needed to restore my faith in human kindness. Sure, that might sound ridiculous, but aside from my friends and family, I don’t get to experience a ton of incredible behavior. Instead, I see a lot of impatience, greed and generally rotten attitudes. But this stranger, by simply returning my phone, reminded me that random acts of kindness- no matter how big or small- can make a significant impact.
